A little while ago, I was challenged to come up with my top 25 horror films of the 2000’s, so as Halloween is approaching, here’s my list…which isn’t 25 films long…oh, and yes, there’s honorable mentions too. Enjoy!

- The Ring (2003) – Better than the Japanese original. Still gets under my skin.
- Session 9 (2001) – Just raw and uncomfortable
- The Babysitter (2017) – A love letter to 80’s horror
- Dog Soldiers (2003) – The performances just make this gold
- Below (2003) – Underrated ghost story
- Saw (2004) – The reveal just changes everything
- Black Phone (2021) – Succeeds where so many other failed
- Monster Summer (2024) – Not many horror flicks aimed at tweens while not perfect, it’s good
- Unbreakable (2001) – A unique look at superheroes
- Splinter (2008) – How to do a low budget horror flick right
- Series 7: The Contenders (2007) – Reality TV at its lowest
- Bone Tomahawk (2015) – Just brutal
- P2 (2007) – Well done considering this has two characters
- One Missed Call (2003) – My favorite J-horror flick
- One Missed Call 2 (2005) – A raw instance where the sequel is just as good
- Final Girls (2015) – Horror comedy done right with a ton of heart
- The Passenger (2023) – A rare Blumhouse flick that slays
- Final Destination (2000) – It knew how to make me squirm
- Alien vs Predator (2004) – Way better than everyone gives it credit for
- Nope (2002) – Heavily flawed but a visual treat
- V/H/S (2012) – Just love the format (pun kind of intended)
- Borderland (2007) – It’ll make you squirm
- Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001) – A good looking film
- Pontypool (2008) – Great film but the post credit ending doesn’t work
- Dawn of the Dead (2004) – The remake is better
- Let the right one in (2008) – That ending just kicks you in the guts
- Grace (2008) – Just an absorbing story with great performances
- Dead End (2007) – Wonderful flick but doesn’t stick the ending
Honorable Mentions:
- Upgrade (2018) – Not horror per se but Leigh Whannell best film
- The visit (2015) – A rare found footage film that works
- Better watch out (2016) – This film doesn’t go where you think it will
- Club dread (2003) – The boat scene at the end looks so good
- The Endless (2007) – Wasn’t expecting where this one went
- Belko experiment (2016) – Better than I thought
- The hunt (2020) – Bett Gilpin owns this film
- Three… Extremes (2004) – I’m a sucker for an anthology
- Hostel Part 2 (2007) – So much better than the first film
- Wind chill (2007) – A ghost story that sucked me in
- Frozen (2010) – Punches above its weight
- Time trap (2017) – More sci-fi but this is a nice low budget flick
- Pitch black (2000) – A banger
